## How it works

Start by picking where you are today — pregnant, breastfeeding, or neither — because the ceiling moves with you: 200 mg a day in pregnancy (ACOG Committee Opinion 462, NICE, EFSA), 300 mg while breastfeeding (CDC), and 400 mg otherwise (EFSA, FDA). Then tap any source tile to add a serving; the minus button removes one, and the total updates as you go.

Fourteen sources in four groups each carry a fixed caffeine value per serving — coffee: cold brew 155 mg (350 ml), latte or cappuccino 128 mg (350 ml), brewed coffee 95 mg (240 ml), espresso 64 mg (30 ml), instant coffee 62 mg (240 ml), decaf 5 mg (240 ml); tea: matcha 70 mg (240 ml), black tea 47 mg (240 ml), green tea 28 mg (240 ml); cold drinks: energy shot 200 mg (60 ml), energy drink 80 mg (250 ml), cola 34 mg (350 ml); food and medicine: a caffeinated pain reliever 65 mg (1 tablet), dark chocolate 12 mg (28 g). The six the app added — cold brew, lattes, instant coffee, matcha, energy shots and pain relievers — are the ones people forget to count.

Your running total is compared against the ceiling for the stage you picked. The meter rescales rather than filling up: pass your ceiling and it turns red and keeps climbing, so a 900 mg day does not look like a 210 mg day. The wording underneath shifts as you cross half and three quarters of your allowance.

Below the total you'll see how many milligrams you have left for the day, how far over you are if you have passed your ceiling, a per-source breakdown, and a plain-language recommendation that changes as your intake climbs and with the life stage you picked.

## The math

The engine is a straightforward sum: totalMg = Σ (quantity × mgPerUnit) across every source you have added, matched by id rather than by name. The per-serving values are fixed constants: cold brew 155 mg (350 ml), latte 128 mg (350 ml), brewed coffee 95 mg (240 ml), espresso 64 mg (30 ml), instant coffee 62 mg (240 ml), decaf 5 mg (240 ml), matcha 70 mg (240 ml), black tea 47 mg (240 ml), green tea 28 mg (240 ml), an energy shot 200 mg (60 ml), an energy drink 80 mg (250 ml), cola 34 mg (350 ml), a caffeinated pain reliever 65 mg (1 tablet) and dark chocolate 12 mg (28 g).

The daily limit is the one for the life stage you picked: 200 mg pregnant, 300 mg breastfeeding, 400 mg otherwise. Your remaining allowance is remaining = max(0, limit − totalMg), how far past you are is overBy = max(0, totalMg − limit), and the percentage is percentage = totalMg ÷ limit × 100 — not capped, so 600 mg against the pregnancy ceiling reads 300%.

You are flagged over the limit only when totalMg is strictly greater than your ceiling — hitting it exactly still counts as within. Two brewed coffees, for example, total 190 mg: that is 95% of the pregnancy ceiling, so the wording warns you, but you are still inside it.

The recommendation follows the uncapped percentage and, past 100%, your life stage: over the limit you get the message written for pregnancy, for breastfeeding or for neither; above 75% you are approaching the limit; above 50% you have used about half your allowance; otherwise your intake sits comfortably inside it.

## FAQ

**How much caffeine is safe during pregnancy?**

ACOG (Committee Opinion No. 462), NICE and EFSA put the pregnancy limit at 200 mg a day, to reduce risks of low birth weight and miscarriage. The limits either side of pregnancy are different: the CDC treats up to about 300 mg a day as compatible with breastfeeding, and EFSA and the FDA consider 400 mg a day safe for most healthy adults. This calculator tracks your daily total against whichever of the three you pick.

**How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?**

This calculator uses 95 mg for a 240 ml brewed coffee, 64 mg for an espresso (30 ml), 128 mg for a 350 ml latte, 155 mg for a 350 ml cold brew, 62 mg for an instant coffee and 5 mg for a decaf. One brewed coffee is therefore roughly 48% of the 200 mg pregnancy ceiling — and under a quarter of the 400 mg one.

**Do tea, cola, and chocolate count toward my caffeine limit?**

Yes — and so do several things people forget. The calculator counts 70 mg for a matcha, 47 mg for a 240 ml black tea, 28 mg for a 240 ml green tea, 34 mg for a 350 ml cola, 80 mg for a 250 ml energy drink, 200 mg for a 60 ml energy shot, 65 mg for a caffeinated pain reliever and 12 mg for 28 g of dark chocolate — all of it lands in the same daily total.

**Is exactly 200 mg over the limit?**

No. The calculator flags you as over only when your total strictly exceeds the ceiling for your stage. A total of exactly 200 mg in pregnancy is still shown as within the limit, with 0 mg remaining.

**Can I still drink coffee while pregnant?**

Within the 200 mg guideline, yes. One 240 ml brewed coffee is 95 mg — about 48% of the pregnancy ceiling — and two total 190 mg, which is 95% of it but still within. Worth knowing: caffeine lingers longer than usual in pregnancy, and by the third trimester it can take around three times as long to leave your body.
